Exceptionally Odd Gifts

The Spoon Sisters-Exceptionally Odd Gifts

When I look around the web for a gift for who ever I'm buying for I look for the oddest things I can find...The more weirder it is the more I seem to like it...I don't like the typical every day things that the odds are a thousand or so people have it also-I tend to lean more to the oddest that the odds are no one in the thousand people have it...

In my search for ODD things...yes, cmas gifts...I stumbled upon this site...
they really do have some Odd gifts...just weird as it gets but things I see I would use every day & even just for special occasions....LOL here are a few pic of what they have to offer...

Yes that last one is just that...A flinger spoon-& yes I do think I will order it for my dogs...
What fun that will be for our outside dinners...LOL...Ohh i can see it now!! FUN FUN FUN!!!

So much easier for the good old FOOD FIGHTS

soy milk-my need for savings PT2

you might be thinking "who cares how much milk the dogs drink"
or worse more ""waa waa what-how much they drink??"
the reason is I wanted to share my store I had typed to the soy milk co
as to HOW much we consume & it would be nice for a coupon or a few to help along the way....mind you at WalMart it cost $2.96 a carton-You do the math on that one!

BOY was i surprised, OK Dead SHOCKED when they sent me this letter in response...

Read on People, Read on....

dear ms.
thank You for contacting our company, We appreciate your interest in our products and have enclosed a coupon so you can enjoy Silk Soymilk for yourself.

Because of limited supplies, we are only able to send one consumer coupon per household per year.

The marketing and Research & Development teams at WhiteWave Foods are continually reviewing our flavor, packaging, and advertising offerings. At any given time, new concept are being developed and tested by consumer focus groups.

The coupon that they sent me was just one for a DOLLAR savings...$1.00
ONE DOLLAR...That is IT ...In ONE Year...On My Freaky Crabs!!!

soo i started a look into other companies who carry soy milk in vanilla or chocolate I found several but, what the catch was how much sodium & fat was contained per serving which can out to be more then the Silk soy company.
Or more so the brands else that I do like my local stores dont carry more of it even after numerous request for them to do so...

I did how ever find the Winn-Dixie brand to be not so bad in the ingredients label the only thing is we only have one located 30 mins away from us...which is sorta a drive when it's not in the 2 mile radius I'm used to driving...Though they do not offer coupons for their soy they do have they extra reward card & I do tend to save that way cause it's their own name brand product...

Sooo that is my new milk delima of the moment...

I have always tried to email companies that we enjoy their product with positive feed back rather then negative which most companies get then the good....& most of the times I get some really awesome coupons in saving in return...My sales paper since good old Katrina isn't as good as it once was...we used to have BOOMING coupons esp in food Now it's more less bath or kitchen cleaning items...not to much for Food...

But, then again my mother always told me if you want something don't give up on getting it well that is what i will do...NOT give up on this endless search for coupons on saving a lil extra on the soy milk that my family consumes in a 3 month time frame.

you don't even wanna know my delima on organic whole milk...
If you have read my last post (some what back on organic milk problems) then you will know what I'm up against on that too...But their are many more options on what brands I can get...just need to travel out my 5 mile radius to purchase them.

But if you come to think of it...spending the extra mile isn't bad for the extra good health & well being of my family!!!

DID you hear what

Hurricane Preparation Set 3

Securing garage doors:

Because of their width, double-wide garage doors are more susceptible to wind damage than single doors. Unless you have a tested hurricane-resistant door, the wind may force it out of the roller track -- especially if the track is light weight or some of the anchor bolts are not in place. This occurs because the door deflects too much under excessive wind pressure and fails.

To secure your garage door:

  • Check with your local government building official to see if there are code requirements for garage doors in your area.
  • Check with your local building supplier or garage door retailer to see if a retrofit kit is available for your garage door.
You should probably reinforce your double-wide garage door at its weakest points. This involves installing horizontal and/or vertical bracing onto each panel, using wood or light gauge metal girds bolted to the door mullions. You may also need heavier hinges and stronger end and vertical supports for your door.

If you decide to retrofit your garage door with a kit that allows you to operate the door after it is installed, make sure the door is balanced by lowering it about halfway and letting go. If the door goes up or down, the springs will need adjusting. Note: Since the springs are dangerous, only a professional should adjust them.

If you are unable to retrofit your garage door with a kit specifically designed for your door, you can purchase garage door retrofit kits to withstand hurricane winds at your local building supply store. Also, check to see if the supplier can do the installation.

Securing the House Doors:

Your home has either double or single entry doors. If they are solid wood or hollow metal they probably can resist wind pressures and hurricane debris. However, if you are not sure whether they are strong enough, take these precautions:

  • Install head and foot bolts on the inactive door of double-entry doors. (Shown here)
  • Make sure your doors have at least three hinges and a dead bolt security lock which has a minimum one inch bolt throw length.
  • Since double entry doors fail when their surface bolts break at the header trim or threshold, check the connections at both places. Be sure the surface bolt extends into the door header and through the threshold into the sub floor.

Securing the Home Shutters:

One way to protect a home from damage in wind storms is to install impact-resistant shutters over all large windows and glass doors. Not only do they protect doors and windows from wind-borne objects, but they can reduce damage caused by sudden pressure changes when a window or door is broken. Laminated window systems (plastic bonded to glass) are another option, and are a particularly good choice for either building a new home or adding to an old one.

The easiest designs are those that simply cover the opening with a structural panel such as plywood. In past hurricanes, many homeowners upon returning have noticed their temporary plywood shutters blown off because they were not adequately fastened. If you have a wood-frame house, use adequate fasteners to attach the panels over the openings when a hurricane approaches. Have these temporary shutters stored and ready to use since building supply stores generally sell out of these materials quickly during a hurricane warning. If your home is made with concrete blocks, however, you will have to install anchoring devices well in advance.

The American Plywood Association (APA) - The Engineered Wood Association offers a series of Hurricane Shutter Designs. Each design is available for $1, or you can download all five designs from the APA's Web site at no cost.

Manufactured Shutters

If your residence has permanent shutters, evaluate their effectiveness. Manufacturers are responsible for testing their shutters up to the standards necessary to resist wind forces and wind-borne debris. Some shutters are very flexible, especially those that roll up.

If struck by a rigid piece of debris, shutters may bend and break the window. To determine whether your shutter can resist this impact, gently lean against it and see if it yields. You can also inspect your shutters to see if they are properly attached to the house and will not fly off during a storm by inspecting the shutter connectors for obvious excessive wear or missing connectors. Ask the shutter manufacturer for proper installation criteria.

Impact-Resistant Windows

Another way to protect your home from damage in windstorms is through the installation of impact-resistant windows and doors. Although these products look no different than standard windows and doors, they offer significantly more protection from wind-borne debris. In fact, these systems are capable of resisting impacts from large objects. For this reason, temporary shutters do not need to be installed before a storm strikes. In general, the frame and glazing work together to protect your home from both the elements and the significant internal pressure changes which lead to structural damage. While large wind-borne debris may crack the impact resistant glass during the course of the storm, the window is designed to retain its integrity and not break apart. Should either the frame or glass be damaged, it can be repaired at your convenience after the storm has passed.

Roof to Top of Wall Connection

Metal hurricane straps or clips provide the proper measure of strength and safety for the roof-to-wall connection. The common practice of toenailing the trusses or rafters often is not sufficient to hold a roof in place in high winds. These clips or straps are usually very difficult to see from the attic because of insulation.

Areas where the roof framing meets the top of stud walls are normally covered by dry wall on the inside and by wall cladding and soffit board on the outside. To install hurricane straps and clips, remove the roof sheathing around the perimeter of the roof to reveal the top of the wall. You may also need to remove the soffit and exterior cladding to reveal the top 12 to 18 inches of the wall. In addition, if the exterior cladding is brick veneer, you may need to remove small sections of brick as needed.

If your roof has trusses, make sure you tie them to the wall by either anchoring to the top plate and then the top plate to the wall stud, or strapping the truss directly to the wall stud.

Roofs:

Gabled Roofs
Does your home have a gabled roof? If so, the end wall of your home takes a tremendous beating during a hurricane. If not properly braced, it can collapse, causing significant damage. However, gable end walls are easy to strengthen and deserve to be a high priority on your retrofit list.

Typically, gable end trusses are directly attached to the top of gable end walls. The bottom of the truss must be securely nailed to the top of the wall and braced to adjacent trusses. This prevents wind from pushing or pulling the gable end at its critical point, where the gable truss is connected along the gable wall. Without adequate bracing, the end wall may be destroyed during hurricane winds.

To secure your gable end wall, fasten eight-foot long braces to the bottom chord of the gable truss and the adjacent trusses with sixteen-penny (16d) nails. The braces should be perpendicular to the truss, spaced at a maximum of four feet on center. In addition, be sure to tie back the gable truss with at least one eight-foot long brace, along the ridge of the roof, to several of the interior trusses.

Shingles
Shingles are usually not designed to resist hurricane force winds. They come with integral locking tabs or factory-applied adhesives that on occasion do not adhere properly to the underlying shingle because of cold weather installation, uneven surfaces or any number of other reasons. For increased wind resistance, have a qualified person inspect several shingle tabs to see if the adhesive has engaged. If not, use a quick-setting asphalt cement to bond them together.

To cement the shingle tabs to the underlying shingles, place two spots of quick-setting asphalt cement about the size of a quarter under each tab with a putty knife or caulking gun. Press the tab into the adhesive. Be sure to cement all the tabs throughout the roof, being careful not to bend them farther than necessary when applying the adhesive. Replace any damaged shingles immediately.

Attach Roof Sheathing with Adhesive

You can also improve the uplift resistance of the roof deck from the attic -- without removing the roof covering. This is how:

  • Using a caulking gun, apply a 1/4 inch bead of wood adhesive along the intersection of the roof deck and the roof support element (rafter or truss chord) on both sides.
  • At places where you have limited access, such as where the roof meets exterior walls, use quarter round pieces of wood approximately two to three feet long and apply the adhesive along the two adjacent sides of the block. The length of the quarter round pieces can be longer or shorter to suit your installation needs.
  • Press the wood pieces in the intersection making sure the adhesive has made solid contact with the sheathing and roof support elements.
According to static pressure tests, using the wood adhesive can increase the wind uplift resistance of the plywood roof sheathing by as much as three times the conventional method of securing the sheathing with nails. It should be available at your local hardware and building supply stores. Please ask your local hardware expert if other products are available that could provide the same strength and properties as a wood adhesive.

Hurricane Preparation Set 2

  • During a storm

  • Stay inside, away from windows
  • Be alert for tornadoes
  • Stay away from flood waters and storm surge. It can be deceptively strong.
  • Be aware of the eye. It may be calm, but winds can and will pick up quickly and could catch you outside.
  • Un-plug electronic devices that are not in use to avoid surge damage. This is less likely that during afternoon thunderstorms because lightening is rare in a hurricane, but it is better to be safe.

    After a Storm

  • Know power safety - avoid downed lines
  • Know food safety - what is good and for how long.
  • Chain saw safety is critical
  • Generator safety is important too
  • Water treatment - whether water needs to be boiled or not.
  • Listen to local officials
  • Use flashlights instead of candles
  • Inspect your home for damage.
  • Stay off roads as much as possible
  • You may need to super-chlorinate your pool

    Boat Prep

    1. Move life jackets and first aid kits to house
    2. Remove cushions and lose items (e.g. boat tops) and move to garage
    3. Anchor hatch covers
    4. Move to maximum davit height, fasten cables
    5. Unplug davits/lifts
    6. Turn off outside electricity to davits
    7. For our Boston Whaler: put in main plug on boat (take out other plugs)
    8. Tighten down davit locks
    9. Tie down boat with dock lines

    Hurricane Preparation Set 1

For those of you who are effected by Hurricane Season here is a list of things you should have on hand & what preparation you should do in case or just before a storm hits.

    1. Determine escape routes from your home and places to meet. These should be measured in tens of miles rather than hundreds of miles. Make sure you have an alternate route to your evacuation location. Major roads may be jammed with traffic or rerouted. Take a map!

    2. Have an out-of-state friend as a family contact, so all your family members have a single point of contact.

    3. Make a plan now for what to do with your furry babies (animals) if you need to evacuate.

    4.
Stock non-perishable emergency supplies and a Disaster Supply Kit.

    Disaster Supply Kit:

Water - at least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days

Food - at least enough for 3 to 7 days
    — non-perishable packaged or canned food / juices
    — foods for infants or the elderly
    — snack foods
    — non-electric can opener
    — cooking tools / fuel
    — paper plates / plastic utensils

Blankets / Bed Sheet / Pillows, etc.-honestly a blanket is good to lay on but, NOT to cover with-Hurricane Season happens in the HOT HUMID SUMMER!!

Clothing - seasonal / rain gear/ sturdy shoes

First Aid Kit / Medicines / Prescription Drugs

Special Items - for babies and the elderly

Toiletries / Hygiene items / Moisture wipes

Flashlight / Batteries- one for each family member

Radio - Battery operated and Local weather radio station

Telephones - Fully charged cell phone with extra battery and a traditional (not cordless) telephone set

Cash (with some small bills) and Credit Cards - Banks and ATMs may not be available for extended periods

    Keys

    Toys, Books and Games

Important documents - in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag
    — insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, etc.

Tools - keep a set with you during the storm

Vehicle fuel tanks filled -2 portable fuel cans FILLED

**Update Maintenance to your Car or Truck**

**Get all gauges & filters checked Also get your tires check**

    Pet care items
    — proper identification / immunization records / medications
    — ample supply of food and water
    — a carrier or cage
    — muzzle and leash

    5. Secure Your Home
Roof, Straps, Shutters, Doors, Garage Doors
    (next post will explain more)

    6. Generators- from whole house to portable generators & Fuel

    7. Turn down the temperature on your freezer and refrigerator as low as possible. This will buy you more time in the event of a power loss. 24 to 48 hours before will cool the food. Avoid opening them whenever possible. If you are evacuating, probably unnecessary.

    8. Pick up yard debris - furniture, tools, decorative items, branches - anything loose that could become a missile. We have placed furniture in the pool upon occasion.

    9. Secure boats, trailers, campers, RVs, and the like in the safest place you can find. Tie them down, anchor them, or however you can best secure them. But, take into account that there may be a storm surge.

    10. Secure all doors and windows with locks, and shutters if available. Plywood, properly secured, can be effective. Don't forget your garage doors.

    11. Caulk and fill bathtubs - extra water comes in handy for toilets and more..

    12. It may sound strange, but do your laundry, dishes, and take a shower. Why? Because if you lose power, having as much clean as possible will make a big difference.

    MIA...???

Oh yes I know I have been MIA big time
for the last several weeks we been some busy dogs

we had my child-hood best friend come down for a week long visit
then we had to start getting mentally & physically ready for school
Here in Lafourche Parish school starts Friday, August, 8th
    Yes, same thing I thought-
what the heck on a Friday for...
BUT it seems to be a good idea over all
get the children to the proper class(es)
they have one day to know what they will be doing & what to expect
from their new school year teacher(s)

I think it is a great idea-Come Monday they can get down to business
with out a question in NOT wasting any time on the LEARNING

Here we are in HURRICANE SEASON
this can last all the way through October
One year when i was a child, we had our pumpkin floating
though our house due to a hurricane.

Also besides getting in the mind frame of hurricane season
& school year I'm also busy with making my own recipe book.
I was ready for it to be published BUT, just when I came to hit
send I was reviewing all the information & WAA WAA WHAT
the price was over the top BIG...this is way out of my range
Over $3,000 it would have taken to have 50 books printed

YEAH exactly what the heck?!! well the search was on for a cheaper price...
that took me a few days but, I think I found one...
So, NOW I'm in the process of moving all 100 plus recipes onto a new company format.
But with 200 books I will be spending less then $1,000 for them to be printed.

Beings I do not have a sponsor the cash has to come some wheres
    Hello Honey Piggy Bank...LOL
I was hoping to have books in hand as of August 1st but,
now I'm hoping since my lil mishap that I will have them in
hand come October 1st-ish about. This will be most better esp.
people Frugal People esp. are already doing their Christmas shopping
& they have a few that have no clue what to get certain
    people who have everything...
well why not a recipe book-huh huh...
    it's a great idea I think...

Once I have the recipe books in hand here at my home
I will make a post for anyone who wants to order one.
with price & exactly how many recipes are contained in this one book.

hope everyone is having a good summer
& I hope all the kiddies are ready for a fresh start at school

More on what we been up to later....TTFN
